Historical Increases

The National Minimum Wage was first introduced in October 1999 at a rate of £3.20 per hour for anyone aged 22 and over and £3.00 per hour for anyone aged 18 to 21. The rate for 16 to 17 year olds was introduced in 2004. The next change came in 2010 when the apprentice rate was introduced and the adult rate reduced from 21 and over from 22 and oaver. From 1999 to 2015 the annual increases took affect in October of each year, the 2016 annual increase was the first to take affect from April.

The National Living Wage (known as the Adult Rate) was introduced in April 2016 and applied to aged 25 years old and over. In April 2021, the National Living Wage was extended to those aged 23 years old and over. In April 2024, the National Living Wage was extended further to include workers aged 21 years old and over.
