Barmaid dismissed by text message whilst on maternity leave wins £8,500
A Merseyside barmaid dismissed by text message whilst on maternity leave wins £8,500. The barmaid claimed she was dismissed from her job by text message while on maternity leave, she was not given notice of her dismissal and had not been given a contract of employment.
Stephanie Martlew, who had worked 16 hours a week at the pub, began her maternity leave and was informed some eight months later that she no longer had any work at the Alexandra pub in Waterloo.
Miss Martlew had worked at the pub for two years from April 24, 2008 to March 22, 2010.
The tribunal heard Miss Martlew had suffered sex discrimination and had been discriminated against on the grounds of maternity leave.
She also had not been given notice when she discovered the news and had been unfairly dismissed.
The court heard that she was not given a contract of employment.
Miss Martlew was awarded around £8,500 by the employment tribunal.
